SHIP

There is an association called SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) that was set up in 1991 by the companies that offered secure equity release plans. Companies that belong to SHIP have to comply with certain conditions and anyone considering using their home to raise money should ask themselves four fundamental questions:

Will I have the right to live in my property for life?

Will I have freedom to move to suitable alternative property without financial penalties?

Will I receive either a cash sum or regular income payments?

Will there be a guarantee that, whatever the circumstances, the property will not have any negative equity?

If the company you obtain your loan through is a member of SHIP, you are guaranteed that the answer to each of these questions is YES. And this guarantee applies whether you are raising a loan with your house as security, or selling all or part of your property to generate cash or income.
